Case study
The Gambia
I worked with the research service in the National Assembly of The Gambia in 2019, through the Westminster Foundation for Democracy
In 2019 I supported the research service in the National Assembly of The Gambia via a study visit and in-country assessment and training.
In January I designed and led a study programme for two senior Gambia parliamentary officials. It aimed to provide a broad insight into how research and information services are at the centre of support to Members and committees, through exchange sessions, practical training, and observing parliamentary proceedings
The officials wanted to continue our relationship and exchanges, so in April I travelled to The Gambia as part of a wider delegation.
Without a specific programme for the week, I worked flexibly with the research service and senior leaders to provide support. This included drafting a parliamentary research handbook, delivering ad-hoc training on research and writing skills, assessing the current capacity of the service (including conducting informal interviews with MPs about their needs and experiences), contributing to meetings, and writing a report with recommendations for future support.
